I am intrigued by how we thrive or struggle in different ways due to the environment we find ourselves in. Reflecting on the process this legacy leaves imprinted, I instinctively play with surface texture, curious about how it interacts with the form. I look to create tension between vulnerability and tenacity within each piece.
Many of the textures I draw upon find inspiration from fossils, tropical flora, Caribbean and Southern Maine ocean ecosystems, and time living in West Africa surrounded by majestic textiles.
Ultimately, I intend for my work to engage the viewer to reflect on how they affect their community physically and spiritually, as well as the impact community has on them.
I primarily use a soft slab technique. It lends itself to adding surface texture. . Using my own carved stamps and rollers, I push the clay, draping, folding, and adding intricate addition pieces of clay. I finish my work with various materials, glazes, oxides, and underglaze. I love that clay can be altered infinitely but requires patience for the structure to form.
